Secularism in the Interview: What to Expect (Without Traps)

Simple definition, concrete examples, and mistakes to avoid.

Objective: to help you respond clearly and simply, without claiming to provide "official answers". The interview aims to verify your assimilation (in the administrative sense) and your adherence to the principles of the Republic.

What is Official (Framework)

  • Service-Public indicates that assimilation is verified by success in the civic exam and an interview at the prefecture (source).
  • The Citizen's Booklet is offered as a preparation aid for the interview (source).

Secularism (definition in the Citizen's Booklet)

Secularism Secularism is a fundamental principle of the Republic. It means that religious affairs and public affairs are clearly separated. This principle is ancient: it is enshrined in the law of 1905 which separates Churches from the State. However, to maintain public order, the State can restrict the right to manifest one's religion in public under the principle that "no one may invoke their religious beliefs to exempt themselves from the common rules governing relations between public authorities and individuals" (Constitutional Council, November 19, 2004). The State also guarantees religious freedom. Everyone is free to believe or not believe and to adopt the religion they wish.

How to Respond (Simple Structure)

  • 1 sentence: simple definition (in your own words)
  • 1 concrete example (everyday life)
  • 1 concluding sentence (value/principle)
