Symbols (excerpt from the Citizen booklet)

The principles of the Republic are a conquest of history The Republic is a political system in which elected leaders govern in the name of the people. It is based on laws that everyone must respect. The advent of the Republic was gradual and the result of several struggles. On 14 July 1789, the people of Paris seized the royal prison of the Bastille. One year later, on 14 July 1790, during the Fête de la Fédération, this date of 14 July became the date of the national holiday. At that time, the national anthem, La Marseillaise, was composed. Marianne became the symbol of the Republic. Her statue, placed in all town halls, recalls the French Revolution. The tricolour flag, blue, white and red, also dates from the Revolution. The language of the Republic is French. The Republic guarantees respect for the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. These three words form its motto.
