What is official (framework)
- Service-Public indicates that assimilation is verified by passing the civic exam and an interview at the prefecture (source).
- The Citizen's Handbook is offered as a resource to prepare for the interview (source).
Institutions (excerpt from the Citizen's Handbook)
The main institutions of the State - The President of the Republic is elected by universal suffrage for five years. He appoints the Government, led by the Prime Minister, from the majority in legislative elections. - Parliament, composed of the National Assembly and the Senate, votes on laws and controls the Government. Deputies in the National Assembly are elected every five years in legislative elections. Senators are elected by indirect universal suffrage for a 6-year term. - Justice is administered by judges. It settles disputes between individuals or businesses, and between citizens and the administration. It punishes violations of legal rules with penalties provided by law (e.g.: imprisonment, fines…) or regulatory texts.
